Dizziness and Imbalance Disorders

Vestibular Neuritis or Viral Labyrinthitis

Viral vestibular neuritis or viral labyrinthitis are the most common acute balance disorders. Common early symptoms include mild to severe vertigo, a sense of spinning, floating, falling, or sliding. Nausea and vomiting are common. When the symptoms are severe, a short hospital stay may be necessary if the person is unable to keep fluids down. For most cases, the symptoms resolve without any specific curative treatment over a period of days to weeks.

Vestibular neuritis may be an infrequently recurring problem. Management of acute vestibular neuritis may include the following, as well: Vestibular exercises specifically tailored by a physician, physical therapist, vestibular technician, audiologist, or other individual. When the disorder is able to be diagnosed very early, cortisone medications may possibly help shorten the illness. Meclizine (brand names include Antivert, Bonine, and Dramamine II) may reduce symptoms. Dimenhydrinate (brand name Dramamine) and diphenhydramine (brand name Benadryl) may also help. Promethazine (brand name for Phenergan), trimethobenzamide (Tigan) and a variety of other medications suppress nausea.
